What is the best RMS wattage to use for 6×9 speakers?
Hey. Im planning on getting some 6×9 speakers to fit into the back of my parcel shelf to give my car better sound, only problem is im not sure what RMS power rating to go for.
I have a JVC head unit which is a 4 x 50 watt and im looking for some speakers that will still allow for the front factory fitted speakers to be heard in the front but at the same time enhance the overall sound quality.
I was thinking of getting some Vibe speakers with a power rating of 135 watts and max output of 300 watts
Would this be ok? or would it cause problems such as drowning out the stereo at the front or causing the stero to blow?
Oh and also, im not planning on hooking them up to an amp either, just stright into my head unit.
If you look up the rms rating of your head unit you’ll probably find it is 17-22w rms per channel. Many HU’s only produce 10-15w of usable power which is fine for a basic speaker.
If I were looking for a speaker to run straight off a head unit I would want something that is rated for relatively low power. If you have a speaker rated for 100w rms it’s fairly obvious it is going to perform well driven with a lot of power. On the other hand, if you have a 6×9 rated for 40-50w rms it makes sense that they are going to perform better driven with low power.
