Need home theater help from an expert please?
I am finishing out my theater room. The room is 19 long by 21 feet wide. We will place the screen along the wide wall. The room can be made dark with no to very little ambient light. We want 2 rows of seats, 11 and 15 feet of viewing distance to the wall. I am going to get either the JVC 950 or the Sony VPL-VW85 PJ. I can get both for the same price at about $5000 which I think is a good price for either.
I really want the look of a huge plasma or LED TV and the immersive experience that goes with it. The wall where the screen can accommodate up to a 142″ diagonal 2.39:1 screen or a 120″ diagonal 16:9 screen. I plan to watch Blu-Rays and HD sports on TV.
Which projector do you think I should get?
Which screen brand do you like or suggest? My dealer likes Black Diamond from SI
Which size/aspect do you suggest? Any other thoughts?
Good dimensions for acoustics. Be very care full when ultimately choosing your sitting distance this should largely depend on the size screen you ultimately go with. Your distances look good though as well.
My favorite setups right now are the 2:35 screen and anamorphic Lens combinations. Its not cheap to do between the anamorphic Lens and side masking. It does add another level of theater experience that is truly special.
Yes the 142″ 2:35 would be the appropriate size for the viewing distance. I would also strongly suggest using the Stewart film Screen as they continuously produce the best picture. Depending on which projector, its light output, the viewing angle, will determine which of the screens to go with. Stewart film screens will be able to best give you the right screen for the application.
As far as the Sony vs the JVC both pretty good projectors myself I lean toward the JVC for picture. I have had a few failures with both projectors but JVC’s service has been much better to deal with.
I am big on sound quality so I have alot to say on this subject and would be happy to give you my opinions if you interested. I do have a completely different philosophy then most.
my biggest criticism is that most home theater systems do not play music well at all. I think you can have the best of both worlds a system that plays music well and will also shine for movies.
I do not like build in speakers and home theaters that are heavily damped acoustically. I understand what most are trying to achieve but I believe that to be completely wrong unless music is of no importance.
Reflections are good they just need to be delayed and ideally good dimensions and the right materials to get the ideal acoustics. Free standing speakers are going to give you the best of both worlds not build ins. Speaker placement is critical and with proper placement will first give you the best tonal balance and loading into the room. Proper speaker placement not only will effect the bass and midrange quality but will give you a 3 dimensional sound field that makes music more realistic and natural. This of course will only more enhance your home movie experiences as well. takes someone with alot of knowledge like myself to properly setup speakers, so take the time to find someone that understands what your wanting to achieve sound wise.
Also make sure you pull enough 115 amp dedicated lines to properly power the system, and make sure they pull it from one side of your electrical panel only. This assures they are all in phase and will not have issues with ground loop.
And of course do not underestimate the importance of a good universal remote control. Budget for a good universal remote and have it professionally programmed by someone that really knows how to program remotes.
Lastly I would also strongly suggest having the video display ISF calibrated by a certified ISF technician. You will never see how good your display can look until it is properly calibrated.
