How can I use a firewire in a computer that doesn’t have a firewire port?
I have a Compaq laptop without a firewire port and no expansion slot. I would like to download digital videos from my JVC MiniDV Camcorder onto my laptop.
Is there a way to do this? I e-mailed HP and they suggested a Simba cord (Firewire to USB), but after reading the package, it didn’t seem like that was possible.
Any suggestions? I don’t want to pay over $50 for a cable that doesn’t do what I need. Thanks.
Yes – no expansion port, no USB on camera.
Get a Firewire PC card for the laptop. Oh, did you say no expansion slots at all? Yikes… I’d see if the camcorder has the ability to use USB instead.

I’ve never heard of a cable that can convert Firewire to USB.
Sounds like you’ll need to go through an intermediate computer with a firewire port to a USB external drive or something. There are external hard drives with both USB & firewire ports but I don’t think you can download from your camera directly to those.

My JVC DVD player won’t play some of the discs I burn – is it time to upgrade my player? Or is it the discs?
